advancing marine education and conservation

Humans have been utilizing marine ecosystems for over 40,000 years. Yet, in the last few hundred years, the exponential growth of the human population around the world and the utilization of coastal areas and marine resources has resulted in unprecedented changes to marine ecosystems.

Changes to marine ecosystems include the collapse of many fisheries, the degradation of communities such as coral reefs and seagrasses and severe losses to populations of marine mammals, sharks, marine turtles and shorebirds. Global threats to marine ecosystems include overfishing, pollution and global change.

Mission

In the last few decades, significant progress has been made by research scientists and conservation organizations to understand and mitigate these threats and conserve marine ecosystems and animal populations. It is the mission of MarineConservation.global to highlight this important work and educate individuals and communities in order to promote the conservation of marine ecosystems and the resources they provide.
